Shake Shack Review | Modern Day “Roadside” Burgers in Covent Garden

Burgers are considered, for a majority of us, a fast, convenient food as opposed to a gourmet experience, however under the beautiful arches of the Covent Garden Market (just a short walk from Covent Garden Tube Station) sits the delicious Shake Shack.

"Shake Shack sprouted from a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park in Manhattan to support the Madison Square Park Conservancy’s first art installation. The cart was quite the success, with Shack fans lined up daily for three summers."

"This modern day “roadside” burger stand serves up the most delicious burgers, hot dogs, frozen custard, shakes, beer, wine and more."

As soon as my husband and I introduced ourselves to the staff, we were escorted to a tucked away table in the outdoor seating area, which although it was situated central to everything going on in the bustling market area, felt actually comfortable enclosed, with a super view of the shoppers and entertainment flowing through the walkways.

Within around 15 minutes we were the proud owners of delicious looking meals, both consisting of two medium rare, 100% prime, Aberdeen Angus beef 'Yard Burgers', topped with top quality blue cheese, and a sweet and tangy, red onion chutney, encased in a lightly toasted bun.

The 'Yard Burger' wasn't actually on the menu at this time (We had studied it online the night before, ha), and was "on trial", the waiter told us. If we're honest, we couldn't have felt happier with the decision, as Lloyd and I are both blue cheese addicts.

In addition to the burgers, we were both served a very generous portion of crinkle cut fries on the side.

The patties themselves were melt in the mouth, and the sweet tang of the chutney was distinctly complimented, but not overpowered by, the stilton. The bun itself had a wonderful fluffiness to it, and didn't get any 'sogginess' happening over the course of eating it. The fries had a crispy outer, with a fluffy centre.

"100% all-natural Angus beef.  No hormones and no antibiotics ever.  Our proprietary Shack blend is freshly ground.  All burgers are cooked medium unless otherwise requested, served on a non-GMO Martin’s Potato Roll.  Add lettuce, tomato, pickle or onion – your choice!  All you veggie-lovers, check out our ’Shroom Burger which stars a whole portobello mushroom roasted low and slow."

To wash everything down, we were also supplied with regular drinks. I opted for a simple diet coke (My own choice of course. I love it), however Lloyd went for the homemade 'Shack-Made Lemonade'. He can wholly report in that it was very true to the American style, non-carbonated lemonade, with a strong citrus taste. Very refreshing.

As well as simply regular soft drinks, there is also a variety of other refreshments on offer, from Root Beer, to Ice Tea.

So after every good meal, has to come a sweet treat, am I right? These guys were no exception to the rule when they appeared in front of us, that's for sure!

Famous to Shake Shack, these frozen custard desserts are called "Concretes", and come in an extremely exciting array of flavours and combinations.

"Dense frozen custard ice cream blended at high speed with mix-ins. You can make your own, or choose from a selection of signature concretes (the crazy-great combinations are specific to each Shack). Available in single or double."

- You can check out the full range of Concrete Combos on the Shake Shack Website, HERE.

As a taster for you, here's a small selection of what you can expect:

Shack Attack® Chocolate custard, fudge sauce, chocolate truffle cookie dough and Mast Brothers Shake Shack dark chocolate chunks, topped with chocolate sprinkles

Wall-nut Street (BPC) Vanilla custard, chocolate truffle cookie dough, walnuts and amarena cherries

Jelly’s Last Donut (TD) Vanilla custard, Doughnut Plant donuts, strawberry preserves and cinnamon sugar

Ours were served from the regular Covent Garden selection (not only do they have a set menu for Concretes, there are also monthly, original flavour combos too!!).

These were called "Drury Lane Jam": A base of frozen vanilla custard, locally made strawberry jam, St John Bakery brown sugar biscuit, and fresh banana.

This particular dessert was sweet. Sweet, creamy, and utterly indulgent. The frozen custard was much richer than general ice cream, and was so thick and soft, it truly is no wonder it's a 'must have' on any Shake Shack visit.

I almost forgot! Not only do Shake Shack have these monthly 'Concrete' originals, they also do some incredible, original flavours of shakes too! A natural expectation for any incredible, American born, food brand.

"Hand-spun vanilla, chocolate, caramel, black & white, strawberry, peanut butter or coffee Fair Shake. Make it malted, why don’t you?"

You can find out all of the regular shakes and floats on the Shake Shack Website, HERE

Our Menu:

2 x Yard Burgers: A limited edition burger featuring 100% Aberdeen Angus Beef, topped with Neal's Yard Colsten Basset Stilton, and house made pickled red onions.

Regular Diet Coke: £2.75
Regular Shack-Made Lemonade: £2.75

2  x Drury Lane Jam Concretes: £5.00 each for single, £7.50 each for Double.

You'll never believe it, but these guys also do the cutest thing, and have a menu for your dog, if he/she pays a visit along with you!!

They're called "Treats for those with four feet", and consist of things like the "Pooch-ini", which are red velvet dog biscuits, peanut butter sauce, and vanilla custard (not intended for small dogs)!!
I don't know about you, but that even sounds good enough for me!

Shake Shack doesn't serve complicated food, but knows how to make burgers special.
Unique ideas like the Concretes and Shakes really help them stand out from the crowd.

Check out the full menu range for the Covent Garden branch HERE, on the official Shake Shack website.

Thanks so much for your fun, and warm welcome, Shake Shack!
We'll be back!
