How To Stay Motivated in 2016

Wow can you believe we are already in the third month of 2016 woop, woop exciting times. Time really does fly, it’s important we stay on top of our goals and dreams to make them our reality. Dreams are great but if we do nothing about them they will just remain dreams. I know I want to experience the amazing things I've dreamt of and I'm sure you do too. It’s not always easy to know how to stay motivated and get things done. Motivation takes a little work and effort to keep up the momentum because it can be so easy to become complacent. Our dreams, hopes and goals need actions, without that get up and go attitude they won’t begin to start clicking together. But it’s never too late to get motivated and make things happen.
So what does motivation mean anyway? It’s a topic we often hear about, people you know may have attended a motivational event or listened to a motivational speech. Motivation means ‘a set of reasons or a single reason for doing something or behaving in a certain way; it also means enthusiasm or desire towards something. Our goals are our desires and enthusiasm to achieve. But how can we stay motivated and keep on track of what we want for this year? How do we stay motivated as time ticks on and we are not 100% sure about the direction our dreams are heading in?

1 // Write down what you want to achieve

This could be in the form of a list, journal entry or vision board. Be clear on what you want to accomplish. I always find it useful to include what steps I need to take in order to make it happen. That way I can take it step by step until I get there. It’s so important to know what you want out of this year and to focus on the work you will need to put in. It perfectly okay to start off with small goals and then build up to some longer term plans.

2 // Don’t be afraid to fail

Failure is not a bad thing, it is such a brilliant opportunity for self-reflection and refocus. If you fail a few times don’t worry about it, re-evaluate what you’re doing and try it out differently. Remember doing things differently will get you different results, and if you trip up a few time dust yourself off and keep on going

3 // Surround yourself with people who uplift you

Now I'm not saying go out there and make friends with every motivational coach there is and get rid of your friends who aren't quite uplifting you. But tap into new connections and be open to interacting with new people. Social media is a great place to find inspiration and motivation. Instagram and Twitter motivational pages are fantastic for this and you can browse at your leisure (connect with me on Twitter and Instagram @stayjoyful_uk for regular uplifts).

4 // Be open to constructive criticism

Not all criticism is useful but constructive criticism can be great at helping you mould what you’re doing and make it more effective. Have you got a friend, colleague, associate or family member you trust will give you constructive criticism? If in doubt ask for help, don’t be afraid to ask for help along the way. If you can’t find it close to home there are loads of online mentors out there that you can access.

5 // Don’t be afraid of rejection

Rejection is not an easy thing to accept, but sometimes it happens and it’s not all bad. Sometimes it refocuses you into the direction you were supposed to be going in. Take it on the chin, refine your plan and get back to work. Use rejection as a lesson and remain positive

6 // Read more

Our minds get clouded by the amount of information we process every day. Take some time to recharge your thoughts with some motivational content. Books are fantastic and so are blog posts, find something you enjoy and try to read each day. Choose content that inspires you and positively charges you mentally. Audio books are also great, when you’re feeling unmotivated plug in your head phones and allow the motivational content to fill your mind.

7 // Take action

The hardest step is starting. Complete small tasks every day in order to get closer to your goals. Don’t forget to keep in mind how you will feel once you achieve your goals. Push the boundaries and be prepared to work outside of your comfort zone. You can do it, be courageous and don’t give up. Actions speak much louder than words

8 // Enjoy the ride

It’s not easy to stay motivated every day, I know, I get that. But it really does start with how we think and how much we believe in ourselves. I think you are fantastic even if no one has ever said that to you before. I know you can achieve what you want. There may be potholes, winding paths and uncertain directions but take a deep breath and go for it. Think about the possibilities, you can achieve whatever you want with some hard work, focus, motivation and self-belief. Every step you take is a step closer.

Choose the motivational tool that works for you, don’t be afraid to switch things up and try something new. Keep your goals at the fore front, stay focused and enjoy the journey that will unfold. You will get there, believe in yourself and keep pushing forward.

Radiating positive vibes your way xx
